About Me: Los Angeles Eating Disorder Therapist, Courtney Fazli LMFT
If you couldn’t tell from the gigantic title on this page, my name is Courtney Fazli and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist here in Los Angeles, helping people like yourself heal your relationships with food, your body, and find connection to your authentic self. It can be difficult finding an online eating disorder therapist in California, but I’m here to help and would love to introduce myself for those who might be new here.
Who do I work with?
First and foremost, I am an eating disorder specialized therapist who is also fully trained in EMDR Therapy. What this means is that I get the privilege to be part of people’s team on their healing journey with recovery from restriction, bingeing, purging, over-exercising, etc. But it’s not always about negative body image and food; I also help people soothe their anxious moods, decrease depression, and treat trauma.
While I work often with young adults, my ideal fit is with clients who are looking to make some shifts in their lives, even if they are not sure where to start. You do not have to know exactly what you need in order to benefit from therapy. What is needed is the vulnerability to show up and be seen. So whether you’re a teen or mature adult, I welcome all into the healing space we will create together.
What is my therapy approach?
I am all about client-centered approaches. If you are not sure what this means, it can be simply seen as we are both two human beings sharing space, and you will always be the expert on your own lived experience. Essentially, I want our therapeutic relationship to be built on collaboration, secure attachment, and maybe some humor or sarcasm (because, why not?).
As for therapy orientations, you can count on my eclectic approach, which would include empirically supported (fancy way of saying backed by research) methods such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, as well as more process and relational pieces including Gestalt and attachment styles. I find this combination to be a favorite of mine and my clients because you get the skills/ tools from CBT/DBT, but sometimes those therapies can feel cold, which is why I loop in the other formats so as to treat you like the wholehearted person you are. And lastly, I am a fully trained EMDR Therapy provider. I adore helping my clients with EMDR and if you’re interested, you can learn more about here or read about eating disorder recovery and EMDR from my recent blog post here.
BIPOC Therapist in California
If you are unaware of what the term BIPOC means, it stands for Brown Indigenous and People of Color. Representation matters in all facets of life, and therapy is no exception. I am a second generation Afghan-American, who has lived in the Los Angeles area my whole life. I am so ready to navigate the intersectionality of race and ethnicity in session and how living with cultural norms from the US and beyond can create both confusion as well as a beautiful & fulfilling complexity.
Being a BIPOC therapist in Los Angeles does not mean I can only be a good fit for clients of middle eastern ethnicities, but rather this is an invitation for anyone who has ever felt unsure if their culture will be understood in therapy. My biggest goal for our therapy space is to be culturally curious rather than just making assumptions for how your life has been.
Eating Disorder Recovery Social Media
If you find yourself looking for some social media content that is educational, accurate, and most of the time funny, then catching me on my socials is another great way to get to know me. I mean I think I’m rather hilarious and sometimes we need that kind of levity when doing work as hard as recovery.
Who am I outside of the therapy room?
Now onto the good stuff- what am I into? Well I’m glad you asked because: I am a lover of home made matcha lattes, walking my chocolate lab Hanna, hopping around cafes in the area (special shout out to Game & Grounds as well as Le Hérisson) and making reviews of tasty restaurants on Google Maps.
As for what I’m listening to, you can regularly catch me listening to podcasts, lo-fi playlists on Apple Music, Florence & the Machine, Doja Cat, and Hozier.
And finally, I am an enthusiastic reader. My family used to joke that I ate books when I was younger and in the last couple years I’ve rekindled said passion and refuse to look backwards. Some recent favorites are: Between Wrath & Mercy by Jess Wisecup, The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood, and The Hike by Susi Holliday.
